So they know how to deal with it and this is why they can afford to help other people. What shaman real is, is the master of energy and this gives them the power. However to gain power there is always a price they have to pay.
There are people who can learn shamanic techniques, they can even learn to do some things and manifest power on particular ways and still don’t have integrity. So the key to be a real shaman is to be honest. And this is going together with power in a better way. When someone is going to consult with a shaman he is very vulnerable and exposing himself and a true shaman need to respect this. Like a psychologist who have a client that tell him everything about his life. When you working with shaman at the Amazon, you work with ones who really know what they are doing and you create a circle which is very powerful shamanic form. You basically create an energetic container where people can work out on their demons or traumas in a safe manner. Where they will not get hurt or caught up with some crazy ghosts or entities or bad energies that will come to possess them. So they are protective in this kind of way.
Shamanism definition is about becoming creators but also to be responsible for what you create, which is what people most try to avoid. Shamanism is truly universal phenomena, in any culture; wherever you go you will be taken back to the roots which are the shamanism. Take a good example of Buddha and Jesus, they are related to this definition because they are talking about unconditional love. In the end it all surround about love. On one level there is no difference between dark and light energies, there are just different quality of energies. You can not have any light without the darkness they are just two ends of the spectrum and that goes on infinitely. So there are degrees in between. So to sum up, the Shamanism definition is about become responsible for our power as a creators so we could quit fighting and killing each other and doing all the dark ego centric stuff.
